Keeping Grasslands Resilient: Biodiversity, Agricultural Practices and Ecological Thresholds

Grasslands are among the most diverse ecosystems on Earth and are essential to livestock production. Their biodiversity is not only a conservation issue: it contributes directly to ecosystem functioning, stability, and the capacity of grasslands to cope with climatic variability. However, agricultural intensification can progressively erode the biotic regulation processes that underpin grassland functioning and resilience. Recent long-term studies show that these changes are not always gradual: critical ecological thresholds can be crossed, shifting grasslands towards biodiversity-poor and less stable states. Beyond these thresholds, increasing inputs no longer translate into proportional production benefits, while grasslands become more vulnerable to drought and other climatic hazards and progressively lose their multifunctionality — their capacity to simultaneously support agricultural production and provide a wide range of benefits to farmers, society, and the environment. This talk will explore how agricultural practices shape grassland diversity and resilience, and how identifying ecological thresholds can help define a “safe operating space” for grassland management in a changing climate.
