For centuries, pastoralism has maintained a close relationship with natural environments. By making use of naturally occurring plant resources through grazing, livestock farmers help preserve a wide diversity of landscapes and natural habitats. In return, these areas provide a range of forage resources that contribute to the resilience of livestock systems and the quality of production. This round table will bring together the perspectives of farmers, environmental technicians and agricultural advisors to explore the links between pastoralism, natural environments and biodiversity. Discussions will focus on the role of pastoral areas in livestock systems, the benefits provided by natural vegetation, techniques for restoring their diversity, and the role of natural area managers in maintaining extensive livestock farming.
