Suckler cattle farming has a long history in many regions of France (the Massif Central, Limousin, Burgundy, etc.). As a source of food, a guardian of the landscape, and a driver of employment and regional development, beef cattle farming has been an integral part of the region for a long time. Unfortunately, it is this sector of agricultural production that is disappearing the fastest: with one of the lowest replacement rates (60 per cent), many farmers retiring or ceasing operations are not being replaced. When a suckler cattle farm disappears, it leads to the conversion of grassland to arable land, the loss of natural habitats, or land being left fallow. The arduous nature of the work, financial insecurity, health and climate risks, and the ultra-liberalisation of global trade agreements are taking their toll on suckler cow farmers and discouraging those with business plans. In response to this, numerous initiatives are taking shape to maintain our livestock farming across the country. This conference aims to take stock of beef cattle farming, its challenges, and the proposals put forward by the Confédération paysanne to support it, with the aim of ensuring that not a single livestock farm is lost!
