Exports of live cattle and meat are closely linked to the availability of animals on farms. Over the past decade, shipments of live cattle have steadily increased from 1.1 million in 2013 to 1.4 million in 2021. Meat exports have been broadly stable, hovering around 235,000 tonnes over the same period . However, after accelerating animal outings, the reduction in cattle herds since 2016 is now leading to a decline in supplies. The trend, far from slowing down, should continue: following current demographic trends, France would lose 1 million additional cows by 2030. In a context of scarcer supply, will it still be possible to maintain our export levels while fairly remunerating the players in the sector? In order to shed light on the prospects and choices that will have to be made in the future in terms of the export trade in live animals and beef, professionals involved in the sector will give their opinion and discuss with the audience during a round table organized by the Foreign Trade Commission of INTERBEV.
Improving the food and protein self-sufficiency of fattening cattle farms is a major challenge to limit the effect of input volatility on production costs. In winter rations, the use of fodder resources rich in protein (meadows based on grasses and/or legumes, alfalfa, meslin, etc.) is a major lever for increasing its level of autonomy. Still need to value them! The conference retraces the key points around the quality of forages and their complementation in the rations of beef cattle.
There are two approaches to reducing straw consumption. The first is to substitute the straw with another material, while the second is based on the design of the building. Substitution is often a temporary response, while modifying the building provides a permanent solution. But the two approaches can also coexist with partial replacement of straw and development of part of the building.
