Grasslands and grazing lands: assets to leverage for marketing livestock products?

Grassland and grazing areas, which form the basis of pastoral and agro-pastoral livestock farming in mountain regions and, more broadly, in challenging environments, give the animal products derived from them (milk, meat, and related processed products) a wide range of qualities. Promoting these products, which are often produced in smaller quantities and are more diverse and variable than elsewhere, remains a challenge for farmers and, more broadly, for stakeholders across the associated value chains. The aim of this conference is to present to the diverse audience attending the Summit the different dimensions of this “extended” quality, encompassing organoleptic qualities, health aspects, biodiversity preservation, and, more broadly, the sustainability of livestock farming systems. It will also examine how these attributes are used in the marketing of livestock products from pastoral and agro-pastoral areas. This conference will draw on research findings and inspiring experiences, particularly from the Massif Central. While PDO and PGI labels play a major role in marketing products with this “extended” quality, this value can also be supported, either alongside them or jointly, through shorter or more local marketing channels. At a time when many studies highlight the diversity of consumer profiles for livestock products, pastoral and agro-pastoral farming systems, which market a diverse range of products through a variety of channels, have strengths that must be recognized and effectively promoted. This is an important condition for ensuring that these farming systems provide living and working conditions that make these professions attractive, while also giving consumers greater confidence in their purchasing decisions for these products. These are key issues if mountain farming and farming in other challenging environments are to become recognized and distinctive contributors to sustainable agri-food systems in the future.
